Located in the center of the Strait of Magellan, north of Punta Arenas, Magdalena Island is home to one of the largest colonies of Magellanic penguins in Chile, with over 60,000 couples of these charming birds. Enjoy a 2-hour ferry ride from Tres Puentes terminal to explore the island. Wander around for about an hour and observe the hundreds of penguins along the way. Then, we return to the ferry for another 2-hour ride back to Tres Puentes. This trip lasts approximately 5 hours.

• Drive from Punta Arenas to Torres del Paine

Pick up your rental car from the downtown Punta Arenas office.

From there, take Route 9 directly to Torres del Paine or make a stop along the way in Puerto Natales, which is a 2-hour drive. While here, grab some snacks and drinks for the rest of the journey and stop to refuel; there are no gas stations in Torres del Paine.

About 20 minutes after leaving Puerto Natales, you can turn left and take Route Y-290, which will lead you through a glacier valley. Then, you reach the “Cueva del Milodón” or Mylodon Cave, where you can stop and tour the area. Continue further to Lago del Toro and enjoy the vistas from several viewpoints.

You can also drive directly from Punta Arenas to Torres del Paine and follow Route 9 to the park’s southern entrance. When you reach the southern gateway, you can stop here or turn left and enjoy fantastic views, missed by many. If you continue driving 30 minutes south back to the main road, boat tours are available.

Make sure to bring several types of clothing, such as a waterproof jacket and warmer layers, as well as sunscreen, since the weather changes frequently along the way.

• Free day in Torres del Paine

We recommend doing the Base Torres hike.

Today’s journey leads you along the renowned trail to the Base Torres viewpoint.

Drive to the Welcome Center. Our recommendation is to arrive early. It is a 22 km route divided into three sections: an initial climb, descent in the Refugio Chileno area, and a final ascent. You will start the hike across the plains for 2 km, crossing the Ascencio River Valley until you reach the first steep incline. This will be followed by a 3 km trail until you reach Paso de los Vientos, offering breathtaking views that justify the initial effort.

Next, you will walk through a flat section for 4 km, passing by the Refugio Chileno area, before transitioning abruptly into a contrasting ecosystem: the Lenga Forest. Many travelers stop here to refill their water supply before facing the final stretch.

In this rocky terrain, the trail becomes less clear, and for almost 2 km, you’ll have to find your own way. Though the incline is significant, the reward is unparalleled: the Base Torres del Paine viewpoint. Here you can relax and soak in the stunning scenery. From this viewpoint, you can see the iconic granite towers that give the park its name, as well as Torres del Paine Lake.

Sail for about 3 hours on Grey Lake aboard the GREY III and learn about the magnificent sights from a professional guide. While admiring the glacier wall, be awestruck by the vast icebergs in a range of unique forms and shades.

After the navigation, return to the pier and take a short walk along Grey Beach to Hotel Lago Grey.

• Drive from Torres del Paine to Puerto Natales

Travel through the National Park and then loop back to Pudeto via Route Y-290, before continuing on Route 9 to reach Puerto Natales, approximately 130 km away.

It is time to return your rented car at the Puerto Natales airport before taking your flight to Santiago de Chile.

• Today, we travel to Easter Island.

Easter Island is one of the world’s most famous yet least visited archaeological sites. Located 27 degrees south of the equator and 3600 km off the coast of Chile, this small volcanic island spans 163 square kilometers and is adorned with three extinct volcanoes, the tallest reaching a height of 510 meters. As a result, it stands as a colossal volcanic formation, towering over 3048 meters above the Pacific Ocean floor. Among its main attractions, the island showcases an array of stone statues, known as Moai, with at least 288 found atop massive stone platforms called Ahu. Approximately 250 of these platforms are spaced roughly 8 kilometers apart, creating an almost uninterrupted line around the island’s perimeter. Another 600 Moai statues, some still unfinished, are scattered across the island, adorning ancient pathways, quarry sites, and coastal stretches. Nearly all Moai sculptures are carved from the hard stone of Rano Raraku volcano.

Upon arrival at Easter Island International Airport (IPC), your driver will be waiting to take you to your hotel.

• Full day in Easter Island

The tour will take you to the southern coast to visit representative examples of unrestored platforms, Ahus Vaihu in Hanga Te’e Bay and Akahanga, reportedly the burial site of the famous king Hotu Matua. Delve into the historic Rano Raraku quarry, home to nearly 900 stone statues, 397 of which are still lying or standing on the slopes of the extinct volcano with a crater lake.

Behold the splendor of Ahu Tongariki, meticulously restored with 15 Moais, which became the island’s largest and most recent restoration. Heading to the east coast, venture to Ahu Te Pito Kura and the “Navel of the World.” Last but not least, bask in the serene beauty of Anakena Beach with its restored Ahus Nau Nau and Ature Huke. The site offers a tranquil retreat to enjoy the warm Pacific Ocean before returning to the hotel.

• Half day in Ahu Akivi

Today’s itinerary includes a visit to the restored Ahu Akivi adorned with 7 Moais, built in the island’s center. Legend has it that these statues symbolize the seven explorers sent to Rapa Nui by King Hotu Matua. Following this, you will explore the Ahu Hanga Poukura, which has not yet been restored. Next, you’ll delve into Puna Pau quarry, where the distinctive red scoria stone was meticulously crafted into the iconic Pukaos. Your journey continues to the ceremonial site of Tahai, where you’ll encounter three Ahus adorned with restored statues, remnants of boat sheds, a boat ramp, and other features. Do not miss the only statue with eyes. Finally, we return to the hotel.

• Half day in Orongo

Today, you’ll venture to the extinct volcano Rano Kau, where a panoramic view of the entire island and its distinctive geological features await. The path then leads to a breathtaking vista of the crater lake. Next, you’ll be transported to the ceremonial village of Orongo, the site of the famous Birdman competition, where you’ll marvel at spectacular petroglyphs depicting this ancient culture. Take in the awe-inspiring view of the three islets—Motu Nui, Motu Iti, and Motu Kao Kao—off the coast. You’ll have the opportunity to revisit Ahu Vinapu, displaying evidence of pre-Inca architects’ influence on Easter Island’s culture. Finally, explore the Ana Kai Tangata cave adorned with captivating paintings before returning to the hotel.

Valparaíso, the City of Hills, is Chile’s largest port and one of the oldest, dating back to 1536. Though some claim there are 42 hills, no one knows precisely how many “cerros” encircle Valparaíso’s bay. Whatever the count, each hill is a vibrant tapestry of colorful houses perched at dizzying angles, connected by a maze of streets, long staircases, and lookout points. Nestled between these hills and the sea is the downtown area, brimming with beautiful architecture, narrow streets, and trolleybuses.

Walk around or take a bus tour to uncover the city’s rich history and culture. Tours are an excellent way to cover more ground in less time and offer the opportunity to ask plenty of questions. Plus, many include Valparaíso’s typical experience: riding one of its famous funiculars.

Skip the line by purchasing your museum ticket online and explore at your own pace. La Sebastiana is filled with mementos Neruda collected on his many travels. The stroll to La Sebastiana is an adventure in itself, leading you through labyrinthine streets adorned with local street art.
